November 7th, 2008 by Kent Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »There are various tools out there that will convert Office (and other) documents to PDF. Most of them license the technology from Adobe – the creators of the PDF format. But most also use the “light” version of the technology that is less sophisticated than the full Adobe Acrobat product. Conversion results can vary significantly with these. If you have the full Adobe Acrobat product (not the Reader plugin for viewing them), try printing the document to the “Adobe PDF” printer or “Distiller” printer that should appear in your printers. This will invoke a “Save As” dialog and you can drop it right on your desktop or folder of choice. If there are not printers with these names, you probably don’t have full Adobe Acrobat.
If you’re using Office 2007, you can get a free plugin from Microsoft that will allow you to simply save as PDF. This tool has been pretty successful for me, although not 100% perfect. It is possible the source document is just too funky to convert perfectly. If it’s got weird pagination or front-to-back layout or something, it might require the full Acrobat to better control conversion parameters.
