Nah, I just found that pic on the intertubes. It reminds me of the one Greg Johnson used to have. I remember thinking that that VCR was lame because 1. it had to be on top of everything else for the top-popping eject mechanism to work, and 2. the eject mechanism shot up so violently the tape always got jostled. And then the dawning of the coveted “front-loading” VCRs came and everything got awesomer.

if ever you need an historical example of functionality trumping quality look no further than the absolutely craptacular VHS. want to make any broadcast instantly look 40% worse? are you interested in being able to discern the degredation of a recording with EACH USE? die a lonely death, giant Kset. how many audio/video-philes will be lauding the bygone days of your magnetic shittiness? the ones that are also crazy and homeless, that’s who.
